Led by founder Sebastian Mullaert, this masterclass reflects all the values of improvised creation at the heart of the project’s various manifestations—from concerts, studio sessions, workshops and other activities. It aims to inspire and invite participants to pursue their own realizations around improvisation and the ways it connects not just to music, but the everyday.

The session is organized into two sections. It will begin with a talk by Sebastian concerned with the formation of Circle of Live and his philosophy of improvisation as it relates to: liberation and creative flow, methods that encourage rich experiences while improvising, strategies specific to electronic music and software, and collaboration with other musicians. Joined by Johanna Knutsson and Matt Karmil, the discussion will expand into a dialogue that reviews their performance the night before, providing a reflection on how it unfolded, and how it felt.

After a short break, the session turns to more practical concerns. Sebastian will demonstrate a stripped-down version of his live set up, pointers for participants to build their own, and provide a detailed explanation of his performance system and workflow. Guest artists will also join to contribute their own tips and tricks. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions and try out the set ups.

Due to limited capacity this workshop is not included in any of the festival passes.
